The Privateer Letter of Marque ‘True Spirit of 1776’

Firstly – the Privateer rum company can directly trace it’s origins to the swashbuckling mercenaries of the American Revolution – the Privateers. The Privateer ‘True Spirit of 1776’ is steeped in history being made by a direct descendant of the Privateer Andrew Cabot. The spirit is made from a distilled, 100% molasses wash, aged in a single virgin American Oak barrel with a #3 level char for 3 years. This distillation gives detailed aromas, a tight and linear structure, a pliant texture and a long finish. The rum was harvested in Autumn 2020 and the result, The True Spirit of 1776 was bottled at a cask strength at a cracking 109.8 proof (54.9% ABV).

The Barrel

  • 10 Litre Custom Made Barrel
  • Made from a 200L ex Seppeltsfield Port Barrel, re-sized into 10L
  • Custom etched with the Rum Tribe logo
  • Made by Head Cooper from Seppeltsfield Wines, Andrew Young
  • Currently being seasoned with Seppeltsfield Port prior to being filled

The Spirit

  • 10 Litre of new make spirit from Cavu Distilling on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland
  • Still type: Stillsmith 6000L wash still and 2500L spirit still
  • Distillation technique: Double distilled, 5 hrs wash and 6 hrs spirit, hearts cut from 76% to 59% ABV
  • Fermentation time: 6 days and 4 days on lees, all wild, inc dunder and muck
  • Type of cane used: organic molasses
  • The unique design of the copper pot still with an additional basket allowing more introduction of flavour, also the practice of pre-soaking their ex-bourbon barrels in sherry prior to filling. 
  • With the use of Dunder and Muck and a long fermentation time, we can guarantee this will be the closest thing to a funky Jamaican rum yet made in Queensland, also a first in Australia. 

Getting your Rum on!

  • We will send the lucky winner both the barrel and the new make spirit
  • The Tribe will guide you through decanting the port seasoning and filling the new make spirit
  • We will also provide any support and advice on your rum from aging, to testing etc
  • We estimate the aging time to be somewhere between 1-2 years (small barrels age faster) depending on your taste and where are located but age it as long as you want…It’s your RUM!

  • The winner needs to have an ACTIVE Rum Tribe membership at the time of the draw
  • To enter, a member must refer another customer to the Rum Tribe using the Rum Tribe Referral System

Adding any Rum to your monthly Rum Order

Rum Tribe members can now take advantage of our $15 fixed price shipping by adding any Rums in our Online Store to their monthly rum order!

That’s right, with the centralisation of all our logistics, any Rum can now be added to the Rum of the Month release for a fixed $15 shipping.

How to add any Rum from the Store!

Method 1 – From the Rum Store!

  • First make sure you are logged in and have an active membership.
  • Select the Rum you want from the Online Store.
  • At the bottom of each Rum product you now have a new option.
  • Instead of selecting ‘Add to Cart’, choose your Subscription from the pulldown menu and click the ‘Add to existing subscription’ button as shown below.
  • BOOM. It will add the Rum to your monthly Rum order and $15 saved!
  • Don’t worry your Rum will only be added for one order (the next one) and be cleared for the next month.

Method 2 – From your Rum Subscription Page!

  • First make sure you are logged in and have an active membership.
  • Go to your Rum Subscription page under the My Account section
  • At the bottom your details section you now have a new option.
  • In the ‘Add Product’ section, enter the first characters of the rum you want to add and choose it in the search box.
  • Select the ‘Add’ button
  • BOOM. It will add the Rum to your monthly Rum order and $15 saved!
  • Don’t worry your Rum will only be added for one order (the next one) and be cleared for the next month.

How to change your monthly Rum order

Let’s Get Started

This gives our members a quick overview on how to change your monthly Rum order.

Everything happens on your Rum Subscription page under the My Account section of the website…change your order, update payment and address details.

Firstly, you need to be an active member of the Rum Tribe…if you are not, head over to JOIN.

The Rum of the Month email always goes out on the 1st of each month, no matter what day it is.

This email details the Rum of the Month and any Small Batch Extra rum available for the month, including their pricing, tasting notes etc.

The way the Club runs is that the Rum of the Month is an opt-out product and anything else in an opt-in product. So if you want the Rum of the Month…do nothing, sit back and your rum will magically appear at your door. Anything else, read on.

Starting the Month

From the 1st of the month you should see the panels for both the Rum of the Month and the available Small Batch Extra. By default the Rum of the Month is set to ‘Yes’ (and your default subscription quantity) and the Small Batch Extra set to ‘No’. You can also see the ‘Next Rum Month’ processing date (which is always the 5th of a month).

Changing Your Order

You can easily add the Small Batch Extra by selecting ‘YES’ to Add this Rum in the panel? You can change the Quantity of either Rum as required. If you want the Small Batch Extra but not the Rum of the Month, select ‘NO’ on the Rum of the Month selection (and YES on the Small Batch Extra). All changes will be displayed in your monthly order.

If you choose ‘No’ for each Rum you are SKIPPING the month entirely. You will see a pop to confirm, and if you select YES, your monthly order is skipped.

Your Next Rum Date changes ready for the next month and you are charged nothing for the month. Plus you will get a confirmation email of your SKIP.

The team behind The Single Malt Whisky Club is excited to launch The Rum Tribe!

From our 15 years experience in running a subscription club combined with our extensive worldwide contacts with distilleries, distributors and anyone else in spirits, we are very excited to bring the world of premium rum to our Australian members. We love whisky and we love premium rum, so it seemed like a great marriage of our love of premium spirits combined with our experience and platform in running a subscription club to let Australian customers experience rare, unique and hard to find premium rums.

We hope we can be part of your journey and love of premium rum as we explore the world, find you unique and hard to get rums in the hands of our members. As we grow we will bring on small batch extras and also our online shop to sell an additional bottles left over from our Rum of the Month releases.

Where is the Cathedral of Rum?

Did you know that there is a ‘Cathedral of Rum’?

The Bacardi Rum Distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico, is known as the “Cathedral of Rum.”

Visitors to the factory — said to be the largest premium rum distillery in the world — can choose between a historical tour, a rum tasting tour, or a mixology class, each of which provides an overview of the company’s process and history.

You can also ‘Bottle your own Bacardi’ at the Distillery. Yes…A special hands-on experience, you can hand fill your own bottle directly from the barrel on site where the exclusive rums are crafted.

Casa Bacardi (the factory’s formal name) also features the signature drink “Cuba Libre,” or rum and Coke mixed with lime. Bacardi claims the drink was invented by American soldiers in Cuba during the Spanish-American war. Bacardi itself was founded in 1862, when Don Facundo Bacardí Massó purchased a distillery in Santiago de Cuba. Bacardi’s lighter rum mixtures were a hit, and the company flourished even as it was forced to relocate. Today Bacardi is a liquor giant owning more than 200 brands, including Grey Goose vodka and Bombay Sapphire gin.
