(hint: it’s Pineapple) Perhaps you’re searching for a fruity tipple to make your next mixer or cocktail ‘pop’? Maybe even looking for something simply ‘yummy’ on ice with no great thinking or analysis required. You could even be looking for the perfect bevvie to serve at a wild cabin-party on your next ocean cruise? (google ‘pineapple code’ if you’re wondering!) Hey! – we don’t judge – AND we’ve got you covered!
This is a Pineapple-infused sweet & juicy flavour-bomb that is scrumptious on ice, completely easy with some soda (or lemonade if you like it sweeter) and an awesome addition to any cocktail bar.
La Maison du Rhum (LMdR) is an indy bottling brand by French distributor Dugas established in 2017. Dugas is responsible for distributing around half of Martinique’s rum brands in France as well as representing other huge brands like Don Papa and Diplomatico. Dugas know rum AND they have relationships with many distilleries all over the globe. So, curating and bottling their own range of ‘World Rums’ was a logical step for them.
Initially, LMdR released three rums as their ‘Discovery Rhum’ series. From these three, the Discovery Panama (a molasses-based rum) has been used as the base rum for the Discovery Pineapple. Bottled at 40% abv – this is certainly no ‘dainty liqueur’ – it’s got bite! The process and recipe is secret (for the record, we really wish there was more transparency in LMdR’s – and all flavoured/spiced rums for that matter – labelling) – but we’ve managed to find out it contains “natural and ripe pineapple essence and some herbs.” (truly enlightening, amiright?). My guess is that there is some sugar added – but again, no info on the label. Not exactly the kind of detail we like to get – but however they make it, they have most definitely nailed ‘pineapple-in-a-bottle’.
What we can tell you for 100% certain, was that the LMdR Discovery Pineapple was a smash hit at the recent Rumolution Rum Festival in Brisbane with everyone who tasted it. We had a few preview bottles to share and they both disappeared in no time with many peeps coming for multiple tastes! We were told by one punter that a 50-50 mix of this and Mad Monkeys’ Coconut n Cane is a total winner! And then he proceeded to go between ours and MM’s table several times throughout the session mixing the two!
This rum is selling for over $230 in the USA – luckily we don’t have to pay anywhere near that price. Our club buying power has allowed us to get this out to our members at only $119 – an absolutely fantastic deal on a truly memorable rum! But don’t wait on this one – there are only VERY LIMITED bottles available in Australia – get in and secure yours now!
Our Tasting Notes
It’s all about the pineapple, people. The spikey fruit jumps out on the nose, barges across the palate and morphs through all its forms through the tail of the palate and finish. Fresh, tinned, candied, dried – even grilled! All the facets of the pineapple-flavour-profile-rainbow get some airtime in this. There are also lovely vanilla cream notes (with a viscous and satisfying mouthfeel when taken neat), and whisps of biscuit spices floating around as well along with pascal jube lolly notes here and there, but don’t get carried away dissecting – it’s piña, peeps!
Bottom line: it’s hardly ‘complex’- it’s truly all about the pineapple. Whilst it’s certainly, recognisably ‘rum-based’ – I doubt you’ll be drinking this with a note-pad in hand writing about terroir. Don’t expect to be looking for nuances here. But whilst it’s arguably fairly ‘one-dimensional’ (or perhaps ‘focussed’?) – it’s also a BLOODY NICE DRINK!
It’s easy neat over ice, with just soda or lemonade it’s your new spritz, and as far as cocktails – BOOM! I made a riff on the Mohito (a Pine-ito?) for the photos – muddled mint / tinned pineapple / lime, LMdR Discovery Pineapple, ice, fill with soda water (I didn’t add simple syrup as it was sweet enough for my taste).
Of course, if you hate pineapple – disregard everything I’ve just written… and buy an extra bottle of the Doorley’s 12. Because if that’s you, you ain’t gonna like this one – not one little bit. But..if l’ananas is ‘your kinda fruit’ I can guarantee that you’re in for a treat!
Did I mention it tastes like pineapple?
From Maison Du Rhum
La Maison du Rhum offers a real invitation to travel and discovery with a selection of old rums in very limited editions. With its Discovery Rum range we wanted to have a more educational approach which revolves around the prism of discovering the riches and diversity of the world with a selection of rum from diverse and varied origins. Initially, the range was based around an agricultural rum from the French West Indies, an organic white rum made from Paraguayan cane honey and an old rum from Panama.
From 2020, the La Maison du Rhum range has been expanded by blending fruits with rum: Discovery rum. It was La Maison du Rhum Discovery Rum Pineapple which opened the ball with these gourmet blends followed by daring and innovative recipes around Pear, Cucumber and Orange. Travel forms the palate – with Discovery Rum,
embark on a truly inaugural cruise of taste discoveries!
Nose: pineapple, sweet spices, white flowers
