The Karu Orsa Coffee Liqueur was used to season the ‘Multi Cask’ that our Rum of the Month was finished in, so an excellent opportunity to really ‘dive into’ the background of our Rum of the Month’s amazing cask.

Plus – well… coffee liqueur right? And who doesn’t like an occasional easy-peasy espresso martini or the like.

So not only do Karu make sensational rum, they are also highly regarded (and awarded!) for their gin and vodka products. Their Affinity Gin has no less than 14 Gold (at last count!), Double Gold, Platinum or Best in Class awards under its belt from Australia and abroad (San Francisco, IWSC etc). It’s fair to say it’s a pretty good bloody Gin.

In a collaboration with ‘The Little Coffee Co.’ (another Blue-Mountains small business) Karu have cut their Affinity Gin (comes out of the still at around 85%abv) with The Little Coffee Co.’s cold-pressed finest (which brings the abv down to an easy drinking 25%abv) and with the addition of a little panella sugar – the Orsa Coffee Liqueur was born.

The Karu Orsa has won multiple medals at the Australian taste awards since its release in 2023. We’ve done an awesome deal with Karu for this one too – we know that 500ml bottles just don’t cut it in the ‘got a bunch of mates coming around for a drink’ stakes.

Our Tasting Notes

As the ‘official’ Karu tasting notes say – it’s coffee with vanilla and orange. The juniper botanical note does manage to make itself known in the nose – in fact the juniper notes really ties the rest together wonderfully on the palate as well. It’s not overwhelmingly sweet – but that burnt sugar definitely shines through the coffee and citrus notes.

This is not just some ‘sweetened coffee in a tasteless neutral spirit’ – but a chocolatey-coffee affirmation of a fabulous gin. A great base for a range of cocktails – or ‘just’ something a little different to sip over ice. Either way – count me in!

With the help of The Little Coffee Co. we set out to wake up the people of the Blue Mountains by making a coffee gin liqueur.
Orsa offers a spiked approach to our favourite morning hero, coffee, by using our flagship Affinity Gin as the base to grace your palate with citrus and floral in addition to the bitter cold brew.

Orsa is a coffee liqueur with an edge. Using our Affinity gin as the base we cut it down with cold brew coffee roasted just around the corner to us in Lawson and add panella sugar for sweetness.
The Affinity Gin brings notes of citrus & vanilla combining with the cold brew coffee a chocolate note is formed and finished with a burnt sugar.
