Description
RUM GINGER BEER! Take Queensland Ginger and add it to Killikโs legendary high ester spirit and BOOM – Killik Handcrafted Rum Hard Ginger Beer.
Launching through the Rum Tribeโฆhere is something a little bit noice, a little bit different, a little unuuuuusual for the Tribe. Weโve never actually run a canned product before, and weโve picked a fantastic way to start. Nothing less than the spiritual sibling of rumโฆ Ginger Beer! Not just any ginger beer โ nothing less than a Hard Ginger Beer from our mates โ and members of the Tribe โ Killik!
Weโre proud to be launching this new product with Killik and the Rum Tribe is the first to get it!
Now โHard Ginger Beerโ is a category nearly as varied as rum is. Thereโs no real definition โ just differing tax brackets. You see, some is brewed like beer (thus attracts a very low alcohol excise), some is made with cheap wine to โfortifyโ the spirit (these tend to be the โcheap and nastyโsโ) and thirdly (where Killik Hard GB sits) may be fortified with spirit (thus attracting highest excise in the category of ginger beer).
Normally the spirit used is vodka โ with the intent of competing with the ginger flavour as little as possible. But Killik aims at something different. They want the Ginger and the Killik rum spirit to complement each other! And they do this so very well.
As for the ginger component โ itโs made from two parts. The first is the by-product of the Crystallised Ginger manufacturing process in Buderim, Qld; Pure ginger-syrup. And the second part is fresh cold-pressed ginger juice made in-house at Killik โ made from local young (or โgoldโ) ginger. The fresh-pressed ginger juice is what adds the โginger-spiceโ component. A little fresh lime juice (of course!) brings up the rear. Itโs carbonated and canned at 5.2%abv so take care โ this is definitely no โmiddyโ.
Our Tasting Notes
So first up โ this Hard Ginger Beer is an entirely different animal to โon tapโ Ginger Beers Iโve tasted. This is a much more complex mix of flavours and aromas. Itโs all-at-once less sugary-sweet, yet somehow still sweet in a different way. For me those funky Killik esters have just found their soul mate โ and itโs ginger-ey spice! At 5.2%abv, itโs a lot lighter than Iโm used to reviewing โ but itโs also a LOT easier to just keep drinking.
Look โ straight out of the can is delicious โ but for me, in a large glass FULL of ice is where this is at. The fruity esters that Killik does so well mix wonderfully with those big sweet – yet spicy – ginger notes.
From Killik
Hello Rum tribe!
It’s with great excitement we would like to introduce you to our very first and brand new member of the family, Killik Hard Ginger Beer. This project has been a long time in the making and we are proud to offer the Tribe something a little different as the โMembers Extraโ this time around. In crafting this product, we have been meticulous in every process, from designing our own artwork, canning in house and countless hours sampling the competition. We chose to only use Australian products, Queensland Ginger and an in-house made cold pressed ginger juice, with of course a hint of our signature Killik High Ester quality un-aged Rum. At 5.2% ABV it has a wonderful balance of sweet and spicy, you’ll be sure to love this as much as we do!
Cheers Ben and Cal
