Awards
- World Rum Awards 2025 – World’s Best Contemporary & Botanical Rum
- London Spirits Competition 2024 – Bronze Medal (88 Points)
Both of these are the current World Champions in their respective classes – and for both is just $199 (cheaper than from the cellar door!). Ironically, even though these are both class winners at the Word Rum Awards this year – we can’t call them rum in Australia as they are not aged for a full two years in wood.
New Norfolk Distillery is a small but ambitious rum producer based in the historic Willow Court precinct in New Norfolk, nestled in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley. Set within beautifully restored buildings that once formed part of the old Willow Court asylum, the distillery blends heritage and modern craft. Visitors can explore the site through guided experiences, tastings, and tours that showcase both the unique setting and the distillery’s contemporary approach to spirit making.
Since its establishment around 2019, New Norfolk Distillery has taken a fully hands-on approach to production. All stages — fermenting molasses, distillation, aging, and bottling — take place on-site, ensuring complete control over quality and style. Their portfolio spans a broad selection of spirits, including modern rum expressions, vibrant liqueurs, and ready-to-serve cocktails, each crafted with a distinctly Tasmanian character.
The distillery has quickly gained international recognition for the quality of its rums. Their award-winning releases reflect a commitment to craftsmanship and flavour, with standouts like the “Near Horizon” spiced rum showcasing a blend of Tasmanian spring water, local botanicals, and Caribbean spices. This combination of regional identity and global inspiration has helped position New Norfolk Distillery as a rising name in Australian rum.
Our Tasting Notes
Near Horizon
“A bright and fruity nose with pear, ginger spice, and underlying florals, complemented by citrus notes. The palate follows suit, showcasing sweet oranges, spiced clove, and warming ginger, creating a balanced profile. The finish is long and complex, with hints of vanilla and honey, alongside chocolate and cinnamon, resulting in a delightful, spiced mouthfeel” – World Rum Awards Judging Panel
“A light amber-coloured spiced rum with high esters on the nose. It offers a pleasant, grassy palate with hints of vanilla and cinnamon, creating a well-balanced flavour profile.” – London Spirits Competition Judging Panel
Furiosa
“Intense aromas of coffee, brown sugar, orange, and chili. On the palate, it is rounded with quiet spices and a pronounced rum flavour. Notes of green capsicum, milk chocolate. The sweet, botanical profile contributes to its creamy texture and good length” – World Rum Awards Judging Panel
From New Norfolk
NEAR HORIZON
For the rebellious spirit and rum lover, we have crafted a modern Australian take on the classic spiced rum. Named WORLD’S BEST TRADITIONAL SPICED RUM at the 2025 World Rum Awards, this is our most popular product. It’s enjoyed by rum enthusiasts around the world as well as those discovering craft spirits for the first time.
To create a balanced flavour profile of spice and sweetness, we foraged native Australian botanicals and blended them with exotic Caribbean spices. Like a traditional spiced rum, Near Horizon Spiced contains notes of orange and cinnamon, with hints of vanilla playfully hidden for the adventurous to discover.
The base spirit is made from A Grade Australian Molasses, sourced from a 100% Australian owned, Bonsucro certified sustainable sugar producer in northern NSW.
This is fermented, double-distilled in a copper pot still (named Ripley), spiced and bottled at our distillery.

Its carefully balanced flavour profile and smooth base makes this a great sipping spiced rum.
It also mixes well with ginger beer or ginger ale and lime, to make a classic ‘Dark and Stormy’ cocktail.
For the sweet tooth? Try with fresh apple juice (mulled or with ice) or add it to your Christmas Rum Balls for a festive treat.
FURIOSA
Fire up your tastebuds! Project Furiosa is an Australian Spiced Cane Spirit inspired by untamed beauty of The Green Places – hidden oases of bushland and rainforests. Since its release in December 2024, this spirit has been overwhelmingly popular and was named WORLD’S BEST CONTEMPORARY & BOTANICAL RUM at the 2025 World Rum Awards.
Our handpicked blend of native botanicals envelops a wild fermented oak-aged spirit. Subtle spiced rum notes of chocolate and white pepper meld with bush flavours to create a sumptuous, wild drink that evokes the rugged essence of the Australian wilderness.
The base spirit is made from A Grade Australian Molasses, sourced from a 100% Australian owned, Bonsucro certified sustainable sugar producer in northern NSW.
Wild fermentation of the molasses, also known as natural or spontaneous fermentation, took place at our distillery over a period of 6-8 weeks. This is then double-distilled in our copper pot still (named Ripley), spiced and bottled at our distillery.
Some of the native botanicals featured in Project Furiosa include: Cinnamon myrtle, Lemon myrtle, Anise myrtle, Strawberry gum, Wattleseed, Pepperberry
