Following on from last month’s unashamedly fruity Pineapple rum (that was a HUGE hit with our members) we got 700ml of your wildest coconut dreams, mixed with cane spirit and popped in a bottle – Mad Monkeys Coconut N Cane!

Now Mad Monkey’s pure single rums are no stranger to the Rum Tribe line-up. But Mad Monkey’s ‘liqueurs’ are well worth a look as well – especially if you’re an avid mixer-upper or cocktail artist, which is exactly what a group of Rumolution attendees discovered.

It just so happened the Rum Tribe table was adjacent to Alec and the Mad Monkey crew at Rumolution. We noticed that a group was coming back regularly for a nip of the Maison Du Rhum Pineapple Rum and then crossing straight over to the Mad Monkey table. After this happened a few times, we got curious, asked what was going on and were told that they had ‘discovered’ that Mad Monkey’s Coconut N Cane goes scarily well with the Pineapple rum!

We had to try – and well – BOOM! They were right! Pineapple Rum plus Mad Monkey Coconut N Cane over ice equals complete awesomeness!

We will leave it to the Head Mad Monkey, Mad Scientist, Alec McDowell to explain how it all comes together…” We start with bright native citrus – Australian blood limes and red finger limes – loaded into the vapour path so the warm spirit vapours pass through them during distillation. This gentle vapour-infusion lifts the aromatic oils from the peel and pulp, giving a clean, zesty top note without pulling in bitterness. It’s all about a fresh, lime lift that cuts beautifully through richer tropical flavours.

Next comes the coconut. We use real, shredded coconut and give it a slow, careful steep in the spirit to draw out those lush, natural coconut oils along with the deep, rounded flavour that only the real thing provides. We don’t strip those oils away—minimal filtering means we keep the good stuff in, which is what creates that naturally creamy, velvety mouthfeel. No artificial flavours. No syrups. Just coconut doing what coconut does best.

The result is a silky, coconut-forward cane spirit with a subtle lime snap—purpose-built for tropical cocktails. It’s the perfect base for a Piña Colada, a coconut Daiquiri twist, or simply splashed over ice with fresh pineapple and a squeeze of lime.“

 

 

Our Tasting Notes

Like the Pineapple rum, the Coconut N Cane is a homage to a particular fruit (nut?) – the Coconut. With just enough finger lime around the edges to knock some of the sweetness off.

If you’re thinking that this is just like a ‘mainstream product’ you know that features coconut as its flavour profile you’re wrong. This is way more adult in both its ingredients and ABV. Same big coconut hit – just way more refined and far less sweet.

The Monkey’s do it with REAL toasted coconut and use red finger lime and a native variety of blood orange as well to give a little acidity against the sweet oiliness of the coconut. Not to mention the 38% ABV which gives this some proper oomph. The base of the C’nC is cane spirit – unaged rum – rather than carbon filtered ‘white rum’.

So when tasted neat – you definitely get a sense of the 38% ABV! But to be honest- this will be going in my cocktail shelf. It just plays so well with any cocktail calling for a coconut hit!
