Description
The Tribe has EVERY Australian bottle off this exceptional rum โ A Bourbon cask-aged for 12 years in Thailand before being whisked away to Jarez, Spain where it spent an unspecified period finishing in 80 year old sherry butts!
EXCLUSIVE to the Tribe, and LIMITED to only 4000 bottles worldwide, a rum that has certainly stamped a few pages of its passport on the way to the Rum Tribeโs hold โ The Dos Maderas Origen Thailand!
Now whilst not exactly common, this isnโt the Rum Tribeโs first waltz with a Thai rum. The Phraya Elements rum was a huge hit with the Tribe back in โ21 and weโre stoked to finally have another Thai rum โ even if we could only get just enough for the Members Extra. This was the entire Australian allocation and trust me, we fought tooth and nail for itโฆfor you!
Dos Maderas is a brand owned by Williams & Humbert, a historic sherry bodega in Jerez, Spain. The Dos Maderas Origen Thailand is, as the name suggests, a Thai produced rum that has been bourbon cask-aged for 12 years in Thailand before being whisked away to Jarez, Spain where it spent an unspecified period finishing in 80 year old sherry butts before being bottled at 47%abv. Only 4000 bottles of this rum have been made.
What really sets the Origen Thailand apart in the Dos Maderas lineup is that itโs one of the very few times theyโve stepped outside their usual Caribbean sourcing grounds. Most Dos Maderas rums start life in Barbados or Guyana before heading to Jerez for their signature sherry treatment. But this one begins its journey in Southeast Asia โ a region with a completely different climate, cane profile, and ageing intensity. Twelve years of tropical maturation in Thailand is no small feat; the evaporation rates alone mean only the most robust spirit survives long enough to make the trip to Spain. By the time it reaches Jerez, itโs already a fully formed beast โ the sherry finishing is more of a polish than a transformation.

Dos Maderas Origen Thailand
Itโs also worth noting that Dos Maderas keeps the producing distillery under wraps, which is a bit disappointing for us rum geeks. Thailand has only a handful of distilleries capable of ageing rum for over a decade, and the style here leans toward the darker, richer end of the spectrum rather than the lighter Agricole leaning Thai craft rums people may know. That makes this bottling a fascinating snapshot of Thailandโs molasses rum tradition โ a side of the countryโs rum scene that rarely gets exported, let alone finished in 80 year old sherry butts by one of Spainโs oldest bodegas.
Interestingly, researching this rum led me to a term Iโve never encountered before โ the โSherry-House Rum Producerโ. Whilst, obviously, Iโve heard of rums (and whiskies for that matter) being independently bottled by sherry bodegas, I never realised the term โSherry House Rum Producerโ existed โ Iโve always just referred to them as โSherry Bodegas that do some Indy bottlingโ. I stand corrected, I guess!
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Big and rich and sweet on the nose with crรจme brulee, toasted almonds, vanilla essence and jasmine flowers
Palate: Rich and viscous with an almost syrupy mouthfeel. Big sweet caramel, lovely biscuit spices and sweet espresso coffee notes abound and thereโs also a hint of sweet mixed peel there too.
Finish: Big, sweet and immensely chewy finish. Very little hot ginger or pepper โ just sweet, unctuous fruit notes with more sweet espresso, dark chocolate and toffee-apple toffee.
This is a HUGE, round and cuddly rum alright. Sweet and almost too easy to drink with little indication this is bottled 47% abv (be careful โ it can sneak up!). If we have any cigar smokers out there – this would hold up very well to a cigar after dinner โ and pair it with some stinky blue cheeses and Iโm in heaven! This is sipping rum that is sure to impress. Does it have sugar โ Iโm guessing so – but cannot find any reference or test results online. Iโm not even worried though โ as this is just divine.
From Dos Maderos
The first release in our Origen series is a rare mahogany spirit shaped by two cultures. After 12 years aging in tropical Thailand, its journey continues with reverse finishing in sherry casks that have aged Oloroso for over 80 years in Jerez, Spain. Cacao, spice, citrus, and coconut mingle with tamarind and lemongrass, culminating in a sea-kissed rum that glows with eastern warmth and layered complexity.
