Description
Ready for an award-winning premium rum all the way from Louisiana, USA! Specifically created to celebrate the New Orleans Mardi Gras in 2019 and using molasses from the USAโs oldest family operated sugar mill, we are very proud to offer the Bayou Rum Mardi Gras XO to the Tribe!
While the โMardi Gras XOโ is Bayouโs flagship product, it is a little different to the rest of the Bayou stable, as itโs matured in both Bourbon and Sherry barrels. The Mardi Gras XO is matured using the Solera Method in Bourbon barrels to an average age of 6 years, then some of it is finished in ex-sherry casks. The addition of the sherry aged component adds dark fruit, depth and warmth to this exceptional rum.
Bayou Rum Distillery pride themselves on being a small-batch craft rum distillery located in beautiful Louisiana, USA. They use locally produced molasses โ in fact they source from a single estate in Louisiana and it just happens this farm is the oldest family owned and operated sugar mill in the U.S.A. They distil in copper pot stills and age their rum in predominantly bourbon barrels using the Solera method of ageing. (as do the Ron Cubaney expressions we know the Tribe love!).
Our Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep, rich red-stained wood
Nose: Sweet oak then Rich fruit mince. But also a BBQ sauce vibe on the edges and even… is that celery?
Palate: Rich creamy mouthfeel initially, then a slight citrusy astringency (marmalade jam!) finishing with a burst off coffee and chocolate notes
Finish: Fairly dry on the finish, a pleasant warmth with neat espresso and high-cocoa chocolate.
Wow – this is a very pleasant rum indeed with quite similar in style to the Cubaney Range (another Solera-aged rum producer). Very easy drinking with complex flavours, lots of coffee and choc plus great wood and fruit notes.
From Bayou
A deep mahogany complexion with a stone fruit, plum and sandalwood on the nose, this complex spirit delivers orange marmalade and dark stone fruit with bursts of black currant and tupelo honey. Rounding out with a long, rich touch of smoke this 6-year-old spirit lingers like the early morning mist that can only come from the Delta of Louisiana.
Nose: Slightly floral mixed with cedar wood, tobacco and dried dark fruit
Profile: Multi-layered and complex with hints of tobacco, prune and oak along with slight sweetness reminiscent of tupelo honey
Mouthfeel: Long and pleasantly dry with honey, black pepper and sherry
About Bayou Rum
In 2011, deep in the heart of Sugarcane Country, three childhood friends had a revelation (as legend tells it, whilst sitting in a duck blind). And so it came to pass that Louisiana Spirits was formed. Tim Litel, Skip Cortese and Trey Litel founded Louisiana Spirits in 2011. The Litel brothers are from the Lake Charles area and have teamed with Skip Cortese, of Baton Rouge, for the venture. Tim and Skip have worked together over the past 12 years to build and sell environmental service companies.
Once quietly produced in the backwaters of the Bayou, rum โ Americaโs original spirit โ had become a forgotten one. The ingredient central to rum โ sugarcane โ had been cultivated in their home state since the 1700s, but no one had yet harnessed this abundant natural resource to create a top-notch, premium rum.
The mates vowed to change that by crafting a Louisiana rum for the world to enjoy.
Two years after the โduck blind meetingโ โ in 2013, the Bayouยฎ Rum Distillery opened their door in Lacassine, LA. Bayou utilises traditional methods with state-of-the-art technology from fermentation through distillation, maturation and bottling. With over 100 awards and medals for itโs various expressions decorating itโs walls, Bayou Rum can certainly back up itโs claim to the title of #1 Craft Rum in America.
