Description
You wanted more Caribbean rum? You got it! From a distillery dating back to 1670, wrap your rummy palate around a 8 year old rum from the legendary Demerara Distillery in Guyana โ The El Dorado 8 Years Cask Aged!
Sitting at 40% ABV and cask aged for 8 years in oak barrels. Golden butterscotch in colour, with molasses and heavy brown sugar on the nose, and touch of caramelly oakiness. The first sip gives a medium bodied Rum, not as light as one make expect from a 40% ABV Rum. With that heavy brown sugar on the nose now turning into a lighter brown sugar on the pallet, leaving a gentle tingle on the tip of the tongue.
The El Dorado 8 Years Cask Agedย from Demerara Distillers in Guyana is a boom bang beautiful Rum from South America. Guyana neighbours Brazil and Venezuela โ and while geographically part of South America, the country is culturally and historically connected to the Caribbeanย andย is a founding member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). You donโt just need to know what you are sipping, but where you are sipping from.
Demerara Distillery, dating back to 1670, itself sits on the north coast of Guyana, a distillery committed to minimising their impact of their operations on the lush South American environment. Some 15 years ago they built a bio-methane plant to convert liquid waste from the distillery processes to energy to power their distillery.
After enjoying more than a sip or three, I poured a tad more onto a large ice cube on this warm Aussie summersโ day. Amazingly, and surprisingly, those delightful tastes did not disappear. The ice did not water away the full flavour, it merelyย cooled the Rum down.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose:ย A strong nose of molasses and heavy brown sugar, and caramelly oakiness.
Palate:ย A lighter brown sugar leaving a soft tingle on the tip of the tongue. A hint of butterscotch & caramel, with some burnt toffee. Sipped neat there is no burn, but a gorgeous warm glow which reaches back to the roof of the mouth and throat with a satisfying coating which lingers.
Finish:ย Thereโs the lingering brown sugar throughout, from start to finish, and with a soft butterscotch feel, with an ever so subtle citrus feel and dark honey. Thereโs the oakiness again when breathing through oneโs nose.
